Art therapy is a fun and effective approach that uses the creative medium of visual arts to facilitate healing of the mind, body and soul. When words are hard to find and our mind is confused or unsure of what is happening, art therapy can be a powerful means of expressing the depths of our emotional being. It is a first choice for kids, but also for those of any age who may find it hard to put feelings into words. And the best part is…you don’t even have to be good at art!!! In fact, the less good at art the better. The focus here is not on artistic talent, but rather what is going on inside you, your interactions with the world you live in and your own unique journey.

Music Therapy

Music Psychotherapy is a fun and effective approach that uses the creative medium of visual arts to facilitate healing of the mind, body and soul. It is a first choice for kids. It uses the natural medium of art to allow kids to express what is troubling them inside, when it is difficult to find the words to talk about it.

Therapy for Kids

Kids are communicating all the time, in what they say and do and, in how they play and what they draw. They learn, grow, and process difficult events and emotions using art, music, and play. Therapy for kids focuses on your child. It uses a variety of mediums, including play and art to 'talk about' what is going on for them, and to help them to heal.

Couples Therapy

Couples counselling allows you to set aside time to sit down with a trained professional and talk about what's working well in your relationship and what isn’t great. Couples come to counselling for many different reasons.

Family Therapy

Families come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes; and all families, whatever their shape or size, face rough times sometimes. Family therapy helps you to set aside time to talk through the difficulties you are having, repair broken relationships, grieve those who you have lost and move towards the hopes and dreams that you have for your family.

Tarra Barrington is a Registered Social Worker in the mental health field with extensive expertise in early childhood education, child welfare, youth mental health, equitable education, and family systems.

As a parent myself, I certainly understand the hardships families can experience and I am here to help you bridge that gap and reconnect with yourself and your loved ones.

For over 20 years, and through a trauma informed and anti-oppressive lens, I have worked with children, teens, and their families in navigating complex family dynamics that can leave parents and children feeling disconnected from themselves and each other, issues such as; separation/divorce, parenting challenges, stress associated with school and/or work, learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, depression, gender and/or sexuality identity, relationships, grief and loss.

I believe that we are the experts of our own lives, and from a client centered and narrative therapy approach, it is you who will tell your story and you who will drive our work together. I am here to provide a safe space that will foster trust and allow clients to feel they can be vulnerable, that they are supported, and most importantly, are heard. I am here to learn from you, and to acknowledge the diverse factors that shape your lived experiences. Additional therapeutic approaches that I utilize are Strength Based Approach, Solution/Goal Focused Therapy and Systems Theory.

I am hopeful that together we can create a path tailored just for you that leads you to living life as your authentic self, to achieving goals you have set out to accomplish, and reconnects you with those most important to you.

For many years I worked in the public sector offering therapeutic support to individuals, and their families, with mild to severe mental health and addiction challenges. I served a diverse population from many different walks of life and have found that we all share the common experience of being human. I have been privileged to share their journeys and to be part of their story of healing.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. Perhaps you are considering therapy so that you can connect with someone non-judgmental and outside your personal support system. You want to explore meaning and purpose in your life. You may be feeling anxious or worried about what’s happening to you personally or find yourself withdrawing from others and no longer find joy in things that brought you pleasure. Or it may be that substance use or a habitual behaviour is getting in the way of meaningful relationships and meeting life’s challenges. Our time together would be spent uncovering some of the less desirable patterns of thought, feelings and behaviours related to any of these life areas. We will endeavour to understand these patterns and I will support you on taking steps towards more desirable thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

I use a variety of therapeutic approaches to support you on your journey including dialectical behavioural therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, internal family systems, emotion focused therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, harm-reduction, brief solution focused therapy and the triphasic model of trauma therapy.

If you are interested in working together, please connect with me.

A day may come when you stop in your path and wonder if I or someone I care for needs mental health support. Everyone’s journey with mental health is unique to them and requires a personalized approach.

I offer therapy sessions for children, teens and adults from Bolton and Caledon East from September. I like to create a collaborative, empathetic and non-judgemental space to explore my client’s strengths. My sessions are collaborative because the client is the expert on their story, and I help them navigate their challenges.

My approach is person-centered; I come from a diverse background and grew up in a multicultural environment, meaning I understand the range of mental health struggles and how they present in the individual.

I use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy, and if required, I also use other therapy models to fit the client’s needs. I give importance to the individual differences of each client and believe in a shared empathetic and supportive therapeutic relationship.

I received my undergraduate degree in Honours of Bachelor of Science Specializing in Psychology from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Clinical and Abnormal Psychology from the UK.

Currently, I am completing my Doctorate in Counselling Psychology to become a certified Psychologist. I have worked within the mental health field for the last five years with adults who have been faced with health problems, loss, anxiety, depression, trauma and relationship challenges.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the Ontario College of Psychotherapists (CRPO). I have a PhD in Theology from Edinburgh University, Scotland, and post-graduate training in Pastoral Counselling, from the University of Toronto, and in Marriage and Family Counselling, from the University of Guelph.

I provide psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families struggling with emotional distress, relationship and family challenges, and significant life transitions such as illness, separation and loss. I also work with people in crisis, whether dealing with suicide ideation, domestic abuse or families involved in high-conflict divorces – including working with children before/after a separation divorce.

I integrate a number of different evidenced-based approaches in my practice in order to provide a therapeutic approach that is tailored to your particular needs; including emotionally focused approaches that work with emotion to create change, as well as drawing on the insights of cognitive-behavioral approaches that work with our thoughts and behaviors to create change. I have completed advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with both Les Greenberg (York University) and Sue Johnson (Ottawa), and am currently working toward certification as an EFT therapist.

I believe that the relationship between the therapist and the client is a critical element in the therapeutic process, and prioritize creating a genuine, accepting, empathetic relationship with my clients. I recognize that it can be difficult to ask for help, and challenging to find a therapist that you can connect with. If you would like to see me, or talk to me on the phone about what therapy might look like, or have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch by phone, text or email.

Art Therapy is often used with children as a way of speaking through a familiar language. After all, when kids are faced with difficult situations they often turn to play and art to express how they’re feeling. As adults, we can do the same thing, drawing upon those skills that we learned in our youth to help us through difficult times.

I have had the honor of providing Art Therapy, and traditional talk therapy, in both individual and group sessions, to people from many different walks of life, and specialize in supporting people experiencing loss, grief and bereavement. I have also had the privilege of supporting people as they work through and learn to cope with challenges related to addictions, trauma, mental illness and mental health, such as anxiety and depression.

My approach to sessions is trauma-informed, holistic and person-centered. Aside from Art Therapy, I also draw upon other evidence-based techniques, such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, to assist you in your journey.

I firmly believe that we all hold within us the strengths and skills to cope with whatever life brings to our way. Together, in our sessions, we will discover creative and accessible ways to work towards and cope with the changes that you wish to make as you work towards positive mental health. Whether you’re a child or a child-at-heart, I look forward to working with you to support your healing.

It takes strength to seek support, and I strive to provide you with a safe and non-judgmental space to have your voice heard. In my sessions, you will be treated with respect and dignity. I work on fostering an empathic and trusting relationship where difficult conversations and self-exploration occur. I have worked with children and youth both as a Child and Youth Worker and now as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I have chosen to specialize in working with children and youth and completed my Master’s Internship Program in a children’s clinic, and work with children and youth 5 – 25 years old. I have worked in a schools, hospitals and private clinics and worked with children/youth with a wide range of different challenges, including behavioural challenges, anxiety, depression, life stressors, school anxiety, and relationship concerns both in the family and with others outside the family, supporting children, youth and their families through some of their toughest mental health battles.

Traditional talk therapy can be quite daunting for children and teens, and it can be difficult to be open and vulnerable when you are already finding life so challenging. When I work with you and your child/teen I will begin by creating a safe space, allow you to set the pace for the sessions, without pushing you too far beyond your comfort level. I tailor the sessions according to your needs, and use play based therapeutic techniques as age appropriate to facilitate healing.

I approach therapy from a person-centred approach. I draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and strength-based therapy when working with you. I incorporate a great deal of play-based therapeutic techniques when working with children.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the Ontario College of Psychotherapists and Accredited Music Therapist (MTA) with the Canadian Association of Music Therapy. I have a master’s degree in Music Psychotherapy at Wilfred Laurier University in Canada. I am passionate about supporting and empowering individuals on their journey to healing and well-being by focusing on the power of the music experience. I provide individual and group music psychotherapy services for individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, learning disabilities, autism, domestic abuse and eating disorders. In my work I use music experiences in addition to the traditional types of verbal communication. We typically think of music as entertaining or fun. While this is true there are many other reasons why music can be therapeutic. No matter how young a person is, what language they speak, or if they can speak at all, music can help children communicate without words! Music can adapt to whatever the child is experiencing and is especially good at helping kids express their feelings. I offer services in English, Hebrew and Russian.
